Miss Hoskins & Ms. Evan’s foods classes made orange shirt day cookies on Sept. 30th. The students worked hard and powered through a difficult lab to spread the “Orange Shirt Day” message to the school.
International Student Program (ISP)
Our ISP department hosted a “Meet, Greet and Welcome” activity which brought together students from GISP, AVID 10 and AVID 12 to welcome our International students to our school community. Students engaged in a team building exercise that asked them to create an outfit using only newspaper and one strip of masking tape. They were also asked to include the colour orange to highlight the importance of Orange Shirt Day in our District and across the Canada. The event ended with a fashion show. More than 200 students participated in this event and everyone had a great time!

The Belmont boys soccer season kicked off this week with a win against Brooks Westshore and an unfortunate loss against Parkland Secondary. The team is looking forward to the next three games at home Tuesday Oct 1 v Vic High, Oct 3 v Lambrick Park and Oct 8 v St Andrews. Come and cheer from the sidelines. Kick off at 3:30pm.

On September 3rd we welcomed this year’s grade 9s, the graduating class of 2023, to school by hosting a welcome assembly followed by a morning highlighted by opening lockers and finding classes. Our grade 9s had the chance to rotate through their classes and meet their teachers in addition to be assigned their lockers.
On September 4th we welcomed back our grade 10-12 students lead by the graduating class of 2020. Our Clerical, Custodial, and Counselling teams worked diligently on preparing our school for the school year start up. As of today, our student enrolment is 1428.
On September 11th we hosted a school wide assembly where we celebrated the beginning of the school year by highlighting many of the great things happening at Belmont.
It’s always incredible to have all of our students together as we truly realize our school is very much like a small town where all feel welcome, safe, and cared for.
On September 17th we hosted the first PAC meeting of the year. Our past President Ms. Pritchard hosted in addition to welcoming the parents who attended. The 2019/20 Executive Elections where held and we welcome and thank this year’s executive:

Science in action…
In Ms. Wilkie’s Science 10 class, students were learning about Darwin’s finches and were each given a different ‘beak’ (clothes pin, tweezers, tongs, scoopula and a spoon) and they competed for various ‘food’ (rice, worms aka pipe cleaners, nuts, seeds etc). Just another example of some of the engaging activities our students and staff learn from!

Consolation Champions!
Unable to field a Senior Boys team this season, Belmont entered a Junior Boys group and surprised almost every team they played, with their improvement in each set matching their energy and enthusiasm. After a close first set against the Mark Isfeld’s 11s squad, our boys turned up the serving “heat” and pulled off a sweep to claim the title of Consolation Champs.

The world is becoming increasingly reliant on the use of information technology in health care delivery. The School of Health Information Science has the most comprehensive and established undergraduate program in the study of health informatics in Canada, offering two programs including a Bachelor of Science in Health Information Science and a Combined Major in Computer Science and Health Information Science. Students may enter directly from high school or transfer from college or other undergraduate programs. Individuals graduate with a BSc degree, and benefit from virtually 100% employment with starting salaries typically above $55,000 per year.

YMCA Summer Work Exchange program
Congratulations to Brenn A. who was accepted into the YMCA Summer Work Exchange program. Brenn will represent Belmont and BC by participating in a 6 week work program in Quebec this summer along with other students from high schools in BC. Félicitations Brenn!
The Royal Canadian Military Display will be visiting Belmont on Friday May 31, 2019. The bus showcases a lot of what the Royal Canadian Military does both here in Canada and all over the world. It has interactive displays and a theatre onboard. This is also a great opportunity for high school students to learn more about job opportunities and careers in the Canadian Military both Full-Time and Part-time. The bus will be available at lunch and during C and D blocks. Come down and visit the bus and look at their many displays.

Belmont Robotics
The Belmont Bytes robotics team was invited to attend a robotics demo and a provincial funding announcement at Reynold’s Secondary on May 21st. The BC Government announced a $250k contribution to support growth of FIRST Robotics programs in BC.
A quote from the BC Premier, “I always like it when I get to visit my old high school, Reynolds Secondary. Even better when there’s robots and I get to announce an additional $250k in funding for FIRST Robotics.

Sierra G. has recently been featured on CBC for her success with RBC Training Ground and Rugby Canada. Sierra was nominated by Rugby Canada for funding from RBC Training Ground as a result of her testing. She has been excelling in the Rugby Canada Development Academy and on track to be identified as a potential 2024 Olympian in Paris.
The Belmont Ultimate team went to the Provincial Championships May 23 & 24 in Surrey, BC, and represented Belmont well with incredible determination and herculean effort.
The field was fierce and playing against the top teams in the province, including the first seed and eventual champions, this was the first time in BC High School Sports history that a banner was presented to the top AAA and AA high schools for Ultimate.
The Dawgs, Cole B., Devin B., Hamish B., Andrew C., Mykenzy G., Razel H., Peter M., Kayle M., Niklaus R., and Lina Y., as well as coaches Sano and Stee, were very, very happy to have been able to participate in such a historic occasion, to give their all during all six matches played, and to learn an incredible amount about the spirit, the sportsmanship, and the strategies and skill sets associated with Ultimate.
We say farewell to the grade 12’s who are graduating and wish them well in their future, hopefully continuing to play Ultimate at post-secondary institutions and in the community … and the rest of us, who are staying, are looking forward to next year, helping to increase interest in the sport, and wearing the Belmont colours with pride.
We also say a special thank you to Coach Dudzik and Dayna, without whose dedicated coaching and efforts to support the team, we would not be where we are … a BC Provincial Championships team!!

On May 24th Connor H., Liam S., Jim W. competed on behalf of Belmont at the BC Secondary School MTB Championships in Squamish. Jim & Liam finished a combined 4th in the team category (X Country, Enduro) in the Gr. 9 division and Connor finished an impressive 7th overall for the Gr. 10 division. As a school, our 3 athletes helped Belmont finish 15th out of 27 schools in our first provincials.

Destination UVic
Gr 12 students heading to UVic for September: Destination UVic is on May 25 where students will have the opportunity to meet face-to-face with an academic advisor, visit the info fair and connect with student services on campus and take an in-depth campus tour. There will also be Reg 101 workshops to attend on campus that day. Students who attend Destination UVic will be eligible to win a tuition credit towards their first year at UVic – one of two $500 prizes and one grand prize of $1000. Students can register to attend online.
Also, any students who are unable to attend this event, we will be hosting a Reg 101 workshop here at Belmont on Wednesday, May 29 during Focus block in room B205.

All students who have requested Biology 103 Dual Credit Course for September 2019, meet on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at lunch time in room B222 (Mr. Grainger’s classroom). Island Health
Recently, Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) immunization consent packages for select grade 10-12 students were sent home from the school. If you have not already done so, please review the information with your child as an opportunity for them to start making decisions about their own health. Please complete the consent form and return it to the school in a sealed envelope as soon as possible. If your consent package indicated that we have no or incomplete immunization records for your child, please attach this information to the consent form.
Although a child may be immunized with the consent of a parent/guardian or representative, a high school student can make an informed decision regarding immunization regardless of parental consent or refusal. This is referred to as “mature minor consent.”

Belmont Leadership
The Belmont Leadership Class has been involved with the Victoria Foundation’s “Vital Youth” program for the past several years. Josie S. (Gr 12) along her her colleagues met a few times this year to decide on which charity would receive a $1500 grant. Here is their report:
“We decided to give $1500 to the Anawim Society, which provides compassion, resources and a home for those living in poverty who want to improve their lives. The money will go towards buying groceries, running programs and other areas of need. We also gave Community Living Victoria $1000 to support the programs that enrich the lives of differently-abled youth. Everyone was very happy to donate to these two organizations as they make a big impact in supporting our community. ”
Cultural Exchange Spring Break 2020
Current grade 9,10, and 11 Sooke School District French Immersion and French students are invited to learn more about an opportunity to participate in a 7 week student exchange and cultural immersion program to France for the 2019-2020 school year. Physicists in Training!
Five of our Physics 11 and 12 students were part of the UVic-ATLAS Masterclass on Saturday, April 13. These students learned about particle physics and data analysis and worked the under the supervision of UVic-ATLAS researchers to analyze real ATLAS data collected at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, near Geneva. At the end of the afternoon, these students shared their results with peers at SFU and TRIUMF UBC in a video conference.

It is a pleasure to announce that Belmont student Navya P. has been selected to receive the 2019 Flying Musicians Association SOLO Scholarship. Sustainability 9-12
Last week our students and staff completed the creation of a living roof on one of our sheds in the garden. Future projects include installing irrigation and constructing a shelter for Raven Dancer.

The 2019 Spring Out of Hunger Food Drive was a great success! Thank you to everyone that came out to support the Belmont students and our community. Unfortunately, we ran out of volunteer drivers and daylight, so if you want to donate food items, but we were unable to get to your house, please take them to the Goldstream Food Bank (9:30am to 2:30pm) the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of each month.

“Spring It On” Cheerleading Showcase
The first ever Spring It On! Cheerleading showcase was a huge success. Many of our students were on multiple teams, and a huge crowd from the community was there to support them. The Belmont team represented like rock stars, and hit all their stunts.

In mid April Belmont sent two teams to the Provincial Mock Trial competition at the Law Courts in downtown Victoria. In addition to Ms. Davis’s support our team was happy to have volunteer community lawyer coaches Ron Dumonceaux from Dinning Hunter in Langford and Emily Drown from NestLaw in Sooke. A shout to Al B. for being recognized as the “Best Under Pressure” and to Bhreagh J. for being the “Top Witness.”
Fine Arts
The Belmont Dance Department took 75 dancers to compete in the 2nd annual Elements Dance Competition at UVic May 2nd. The dancers competed in a variety of dances including several student choreographed pieces. All the students performed their best and left it all out on the dance floor. They were very supportive of all dancers on stage and were so great at cheering for everyone, Belmont won the School Spirit award, which is given to the school that shows the most spirit for all dances and dancers regardless of what school they come from! Go Belmont!

Belmont Ultimate Frisbee
The Belmont Ultimate Dawgs Team played its first two games of the inaugural season of Senior High School Ultimate in the province of BC. Playing at GNS in Victoria on a Friday afternoon (5 April), against the host team and a very strong Oak Bay High team, as well as blustery winds, the 12 team members played with great spirit and energy. Although they came up short on the scoreboard, each and every member of the team and the coaches were very happy and proud with the effort; we were all most impressed with the incredible fortitude of the three lady team members who played every minute of both games. The team’s next games are on Monday, May 15th at Beckwith Park, and will be practicing every Monday and Wednesday through the middle of May … everyone is welcome to join them … come one, come all, and toss a disc!! Go Dawgs!!

Girls’ Rugby – The Islands
The girls played two round robin games going undefeated in April and then played Brentwood in the semi finals and won yet again. The girls play kept getting better and better as the day progressed. We faced Shawnigan Lake in the finals and held them to a 12-5 score at half. Unfortunately, Shawnigan kept the pressure on and we eventually gave up a few more scores before the game ended.
The ladies represented Belmont very well, and even missing key components of the team still placed second on the Islands, amazing! We were super impressed with their toughness and unwillingness to quit. The senior girls travelled to North Vancouver to compete in the seven aside rugby Provincials. The girls battled hard and we had enough talent to fight for a repeat championship. Unfortunately, injuries and a lack of experienced depth prevented us from reaching our goal of competing for the final prize. We were so impressed by their grit and determination. Even with the injuries we managed a 10th place finish in the province! Great job ladies!

SD62 presents an opportunity for parents, students, and staff to learn more about the health risks associated with vaping, smoking, and drug use.
“The speaker on vaping is from VIHA, Dr. John K. Reid, Site Chief & Division Head Respirology, Island Health, South Island and will be educating parents on youth vaping and the dangers of high nicotine juicing.
The speaker on cannabis, is Dave Hepburn, a national specialist on cannabis research. He will be discussing the dangers of cannabis use in teens with regards to brain development and early usage. He is one of the leading authorities on medicinal cannabis and is a bit of a celebrity in the medical world. He had a show on CBC called “Wisequacks” and has made Oprah appearances and worked with high level athletes throughout his career. Currently….
“One of Canada’s foremost medical cannabis educator of physicians and the scientific and lay communities. He is a member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians (SCC), International Association for Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM),The International Cannabis Research Society (ICRS), Physicians for Medical Cannabis (PMC) and the American Academy of Cannabinoid Medicine (AACM).”
Constable Don McIntosh from the RCMP will also be present with legal information for parents on both Vaping and Cannabis possession in youth.”
