Year end message from Principal

Laura Fulton

It’s hard to believe we’re already approaching the end of another school year at Belmont!

The design and implementation of our new school logo this year exemplified the spirit of collaboration among students, staff, and the wider community. This project, along with many others, reflects the vibrant school culture we continue to build together. From pep rallies and performances to cross-curricular learning experiences, such as the cross-curricular project between ceramics and chemistry students, this year has been full of meaningful connections and creativity.

I am continually impressed by the kindness of our students. Every day, countless small acts contribute to making Belmont a welcoming and supportive learning environment. Whether it’s holding a door open, offering a cheerful greeting, or lending a helping hand, these small gestures often have the greatest impact.

Thank you to all Belmont families for your unwavering support and partnership. Your involvement, encouragement, and trust have been essential to our student success and well-being.

Please note that Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26 are Completion Days, during which attendance is by appointment at the request of the student or teacher. These days provide an opportunity for students to complete outstanding work. However, it is important to remember that learning is a process that takes place over time. It is not acceptable for students to submit a large number of assignments at the end of the semester. Consistent engagement and attendance throughout the term remain our expectation.

We look forward to welcoming Grade 9 students back to school on Tuesday, September 2 (half day), and all grades on Wednesday, September 3 (full day). Additional details about the 2025–2026 school year will be shared with students and families in late August.

Wishing you all a safe, restful, and joyful summer!

Hello Graduating Families

A few reminders about the upcoming Commencement ceremonies at UVIC this coming Sunday June 15th. A parking map has been included for those unfamiliar with UVIC, the Farquhar Auditorium is in the Jamie Cassels Centre marked on the middle right of the map and circled in red.

  • Students arrive at UVIC Farquhar Auditorium where they lined up for the commencement rehearsal (pink highlight inside of the red circle) NO LATER than 10:30am for 11am ceremony, 2:30 for 3pm. Arriving earlier allows for photos with their classmates before being asked to line up for entry to the ceremony.
  • They should dress appropriately for weather and a warm auditorium with a gown, hat, and sash ready for the ceremony (Remember that we can see your feet and shirt collar area but the rest will be covered by your gown 🙂
  • Gowns should come out of the packaging as soon as possible to help with wrinkling and should not be ironed. Using a steamer or hanging in the bathroom while running a hot shower will help remove wrinkles.

Please check your students or your emails which were given when paying for Grad to make sure you have your tickets. Ticketing questions can go through the UVIC ticket centre (250) 721-8480 or we can answer most other questions at Belmont Office 250-478-5501. . We’re looking forward to celebrating our grads with you!

Athletic Banquet

This year Belmont had over 200 athletes and many coaches join us for our Athletic Banquet. This school year was a monumental year for our Belmont teams and Athletes. Not only did we have a record breaking number of athletes participating this year, we also brought home many team and individual accolades. A few highlights include four Island Championship titles (Junior Varsity Football, Junior Boys Soccer, Junior Boys Rugby 7’s, Senior Boys Rugby 7’s) and two individual Island Champions (Jacob K.- wrestling, Zach M.- 100 meters). Many teams also participated in Island Championships (Senior Girls Basketball, Senior Boys Basketball, Senior Girls Volleyball, Girls Rugby 7’s, Golf). Our Junior Girls Volleyball team came in second at the Island Championship and participated in Provincials. Our Senior Boys badminton team won City Play offs and our Golf team finished second in the cities and 5th at the Islands. Our year end banquet celebrated each Belmont athlete and team as well as a few individual awards (Sportsperson for each grade, Athlete of the Year for each grade, etc…) We want to thank everyone for their continued support with our program and our athletes! Go Dawgs!

Marine Biology 11 and Aquatic Chemistry 11

We are thrilled to share highlights from the recent three-day camping adventure of our Marine Biology 11 and Aquatic Chemistry 11 students on beautiful Galiano Island! During the trip, students partnered with the Galiano Conservancy to actively contribute to environmental stewardship by removing invasive species in the unique Garry Oak Ecosystems and supporting forest restoration efforts. Alongside this hands-on work, they deepened their understanding of marine biology through immersive field studies and learned more about Indigenous aquaculture practices and ethnobotany. One of the trip’s most magical moments was witnessing bioluminescence during a marine night show—an unforgettable experience that brought science to life under the stars. This trip not only enhanced their scientific knowledge but also fostered teamwork, environmental responsibility, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

This semester, the Marine Biology 11 and Aquatic Chemistry 11 class at Belmont Secondary embarked on an incredible journey exploring the rich marine environments of our region. Students enjoyed a memorable boat trip to Race Rocks, where they observed diverse marine life and unique ecosystems. At Pearson College, they deepened their scientific understanding through interactive field studies, while an ecological investigation of the low tide zones at Whiffin Spit allowed them to catalog intertidal species and study coastal dynamics. They conducted detailed algae and invertebrate surveys at East Sooke Park, gaining hands-on experience with shoreline biodiversity. The class also partnered with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and Goldstream Hatchery to actively participate in salmon enhancement projects, contributing to local conservation efforts. Water quality testing at various nearby sites gave students practical skills in aquatic chemistry and environmental monitoring. Exploring ancient shell middens at Montague Harbour on Galiano Island connected them with Indigenous history and the long-standing human relationship with the sea. Throughout the semester, their explorations of the Salish Sea deepened their appreciation for this vibrant and vital marine ecosystem. The dedication and curiosity shown by the students made this semester an inspiring journey of discovery and growth in marine science.
